The show tells the lighthearted yet tragic struggles of a young lion cub called Simba, who is fated by birthright to become the King of the Pride Lands succeeding his father. The African safari however is filled with secrecy and internal strife, as even in this pure and childlike musical, misfortune comes when the young prince's father and King is murdered due to the actions of his estranged uncle Scar, who wishes to take over as King of these lands. The young Simba fears for his own life and goes into hiding that spans years. While away in the forest, he meets new friends, Timon and Pumbaa, who encourage him to forget his past and live life on his own terms. the young prince's happy-go-lucky mindset then takes a turn when he once again meets his childhood confidant Nala, who encourages him to return to the Pride Lands and appeals to him to save the people of his land.

This complicated plot of tragedy, true friendship, and eventual redemption is amplified by the iconic and emotional music, created by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, coupled with additional songs and lyrics from the likes of Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have contributed to the immense success of the show not only in the United States, but also in several tours all over the world.

The original stage adaptation debuted on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was an instant box office hit and set a standard for contemporary theater, ending up to the show's shift and beginnings on the Broadway stage on October 15, 1997.
