In the middle of social and political discontent in the 1800s in Paris, a sentenced criminal going by the name of Jean Valjean escapes his parole after nineteen years on the chain gang. Due to a fortunate, albeit lucky, series of events, Jean Valjean is free to make his next move and creates a new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, eventually attaining the positions of a factory owner and a mayor. Though initially successful in concealing his identity from his nemesis Javert, Valjean is inevitably drawn in the ongoing bloody rebellion of France, wherein Valjean is forced to make choices that would affect both himself and his adopted daughter, Cosette.
