More than 40 years ago, history was being made when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg prepared the very first play script for Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s late novel of the same name, the plot of Les Mis was transformed into a theater play as a show only sung from start to finish, which was monumental in that era.
After a limited season performed in French in France, there was obviously a growing demand to make an English version, and once Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he fully committed and agreed to produce an English interpretation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the English songs. The English version of Les Mis at first debuted with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and positive reviews from critics, it rapidly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, London theatre's premier theater, and was performed for close to two decades. The West End play then moved one more time to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until today. Counting all its productions since its inception four decades ago, Les Misérables is actually the longest-running stage play so far in this generation.
With almost 40 years in London alone and not even enumerating its shows in other countries, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is with certainty that this global hit endures and is excellent in the eyes of the musical’s audiences. The narrative and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and selfless love, always brings each viewer to tears because of the revealed passion behind the mask of each character and act staged. Les Misérables has become so critically-acclaimed that the show has been converted to films several times and gained loyal fanbases even on a different medium.
This upcoming April’s production of Les Mis has it in Idaho, where the show will be hosted on Friday 24th April 2026, in Morrison Center For The Performing Arts, Boise. For fully lyricized show like Les Misérables, locals can agree that Morrison Center For The Performing Arts is the top option thanks to its audio engineering and acoustic range, as well as a grand constructed stage to have the musical.
