More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg created the very first musical screenplay for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Based on Victor Hugo’s late book of the matching name, Les Misérables was modified and turned into a musical as a fully sung-through show, which was monumental in that era.

After an initial showing in France, there was evidently great clamor to produce an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh discovered the musical score, he instantly fell in love and agreed to write an English version hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the English lyrics. The English staging of Les Misérables only debuted with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but due to its astounding success and positive reviews from critics, the musical rapidly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a more bustling and premier location, and remained there for 19 years. The West End play then moved once more to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and maintains its shows up until present day. Adding together all its tours since its inception four decades ago, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is statistically the longest-running musical of all time.

With almost 4 decades in London on its own and not even counting its tours in foreign cities, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is incontrovertible that this global hit endures and is unbelievable in the perspective of the musical’s audiences. The storyline and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and selfless love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings due to the revealed emotion behind the mask of each character and act staged. Les Misérables has become so successful that it has been turned into motion pictures several times and has been met with glowing reviews even on another medium.

This coming April’s run of Les Misérables carries it to Idaho, where the show will be running on Saturday 25th April 2026, in Morrison Center For The Performing Arts, Boise.
