In 1935, there was a large amount of racial prejudice in Maycomb, Alabama. Young Jean Louise Finch, also affectionately known as Scout, manages to lead a luxurious lifestyle that is relatively easygoing and clear of any racial issues. All of that changes when Scout observes Atticus Finch, her father, defending Tom Robinson from an eventual death sentence brought on by racial prejudice.

Scout begins to recognize that not everything that society characterizes as true is wholly correct. With the aid of Atticus and her older brother Jem, Scout discovers that part of "growing up" is doing what is right, even if it means paying a significant price.
